Open only during the summer months, Volunteer Point is a further hour and a half off-road past Johnson's Harbour Farm (which is an hour drive from Stanley). Accessible only by 4WD, its privately owned, and has been in the same family since 1870.
Volunteer Point is home to the largest king penguin colony in the Falklands (1000 pairs), this colony is also the most accesible in the world. Gentoo and magellanic penguins also nest in large numbers nearby, next to the beautiful 2-mile white sand beach.
Over forty bird species have been recorded in this area including the south american terns, rock cormorants, oystercatchers, and kelp and dolphin gulls. All three species of penguin provide easy pickings for several breeding pairs of the predatory falklands skua, who each target a particular group of eggs or young.
